TGA Announces Product Innovation, Community Service and TGA Award Winners at The Travel Goods Show

Chicago, IL — Winners were announced at The Travel Goods Association’s annual awards ceremony March 7, 2011 at The Travel Goods Show, honoring standouts in product design, community leadership and industry achievement.

First place went to Thüle’s $299.99 Crossover Rolling Duffel, a large-capacity wheeled gear bag with wide-mouth access, structural exoskeleton and molded polypropylene back panel to help protect bag and contents. A standout feature is the heat-molded, removable SafeZone™ compartment to protect eyewear, electronics and other fragile items.

Second place went to Shelves-To-GO®, for its completely new packing concept. Rather than packing your suitcase, you pack your Shelves-To-GO, which accordions as it’s dropped into your suitcase. The entire unit lifts out to hang in the hotel closet, simplifying organization and unpacking while keeping your clothes isolated from dirty hotel drawers, and reducing the possibility of accidentally leaving something behind.

Third place went to Powerbag for its $179.99 Business Class Pack, a high-end checkpoint-friendly laptop backpack with a built-in 6000mAh battery for recharging portable electronics. The unit features a full-size USB socket, micro- and mini-USB plugs and a 30-pin Apple connector, and carries enough juice to charge a typical cell phone battery four times over.

The Buzz Award — voted on by retailers and media attending the recent Travel Goods Show in Chicago — was swept by exhibitor Cabeau for its Travel Blankid®. The Buzz Award is awarded every year to the product that has created the most "buzz"in the Travel Goods Show's New Products Pavilion.

The Travel Blankid® combines a super soft plush animal that transforms into a blanket, travel pillow and backpack. It contains awater-repellent inner bag that the child's belongings can be placed into and taken out when the Blankid® is converted from a backpack to a blanket and travel pillow. It also features an outer pocket for additional storage. Perfect for travel in a car, plane, train or bus, this children's traveling companion warms, comforts and carries. MSRP: $29.99. Immediately following the devastating Haitian earthquake, ExOfficio’s team culled through its overstock and closeout items, donating $430,000 worth of technical clothing to Haitian earthquake victims. What’s more, the company turned its trade show Happy Hour events into fundraisers, donating 100% of proceeds to Haitian earthquake relief, earning the admiration of industry peers and TGA’s Community Service Award.

Don Godshaw of Travelon earned the TGA Award, the travel goods industry’s highest honor for lifetime achievement and outstanding contributions to the industry and community. Godshaw came up as a retailer and rep in the ski business before transitioning to luggage and travel goods, leaving an indelible mark and helping shape the way business is conducted in this incredibly vibrant, high-energy industry.
