AMD Travel Accessories Inc.
Alisa Driscoll’s invention of Pitotubes — sleekly styled, airless pump, travel bottles — led her to form AMD Travel Accessories, Inc. in 2005. Pitotubes are specifically designed for the rigors of air travel and allow travelers to bring along a selection of their own personal care products.
“What sets Pitotubes apart from similar products is that they are airless, sealed-tight bottles, have a bottom piston that rises to the top extracting 75% more of your products than traditional pumps, are made from recycled plastic and are re-usable (eco-friendly),” says Driscoll.
Pitotubes are named for Henri Pitot (1695-1771), a French physicist and hydraulic engineer who invented the pitot tube used on aircraft to measure air speed. Their unique bottom piston allows them to change volume without filling with air as a product is consumed. This makes them able to withstand the atmospheric pressure changes of repeated airline flights without leakage since it is the expansion of trapped air that causes many containers to leak in flight. At less than three ounces each, Pitotubes are also TSA-friendly.
Pitotubes can be purchased in a travel kit that includes a metallic nylon, fine mesh bag with a designer toggle pull and six travel bottles (two of each size — 15 ml, 30 ml and 50 ml), and come with pre-printed and customizable, waterproof labels. “Pitotubes are elegant, lightweight, easy to pack and carry. Just fill these Pitotubes up with your favorite elixirs, throw them in your carry-on or checked-luggage and you are set to go!,” says Driscoll.
