Women’s Goods are Hot

"Designed by women, for women” was a big trend at the 2006 Travel Goods Show. Six new companies founded on that very premise were first-time exhibitors — and that’s in addition to new women-specific product lines from other manufacturers. For years, women’s business cases and travel goods have consisted solely of color variations of existing products. Now they’re a legitimate category with laptop cases that resemble high-end designer purses; business cases with dedicated compartments for personal accessories like cosmetics; even laptop carriers with pockets designed specifically for diapers and baby blankets. "For women, fashion and function are inseparable when it comes to travel goods,” explained TGA president Michele Marini Pittenger. "Women want something functional, that will do the job — but still give her some personal expression, something with style. People take more with them every day, and the new business cases and travel bags not only look stylish, they help you organize your business papers, PDA and cell phone. They’re indispensable for business, and travel.” Women account for more than 40 percent of business travel, according to one recent survey, so they’re more than just a trend — they’re a market force that’s only gaining momentum.
